Yes, you read that right, there are definite moves for GM crops to be accredited for official UN carbon offset credits. The argument is that when crops such as GM “Roundup Ready” soya are sprayed with the powerful weedkiller “Roundup”, all weeds die back, reducing the need for weed tillage. As tilling releases CO2 from the soil, Monsanto is now trying to present its crop as “Conservation Tillage”, and a solution to climate change. This means that huge GM plantations that contaminate local crop varieties, destroy biodiversity with powerful herbicides, use heavily industrialised machinery, and evict small farmers as they spread into their lands, could gain additional financing from carbon offsetting. And this could well drive the spread of GM crops in Africa.
