attempted coup in Ecuador
Ottawa and Toronto: Common Frontiers-Canada condemns in the strongest possible terms the attempted coup in Ecuador. Privileged groups, reactionary elements in the police force and Ecuadorian army in collusion with followers of ex-Colonel Lucio Gutierrez, have attempted to destroy the positive changes made under the current Citizen’s Revolution on behalf of the nation’s most marginalized
We call on Canadians as well as on the international community to remain alert to future attempts to overthrow the elected government by anti-democratic forces both inside and outside Ecuador. And to those who have supported this act of violence against the people and the democratic process in Ecuador as part of their efforts to stop at all costs the progressive changes underway in our continent, we say – you will not succeed.

We call on the Canadian government to roundly and unequivocally condemn this heinous act which attempts to undermine the rule of law in the sister Republic of Ecuador.

Common Frontiers says NO to the coup d’etat, but YES to the Ecuadorian people who have been out on the streets in their thousands to defend not only the country’s sovereignty but also the constitutional order in Ecuador.

SUMMARY OF THE GLOBAL CONFERENCE ON AGRICULTURE, FOOD SECURITY AND CLIMATE CHANGE

31 OCTOBER – 5 NOVEMBER 2010

The Global Conference on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change was held from 31 October to 5 November 2010 at the World Forum in The Hague, the Netherlands. The Conference was organized by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation in close cooperation with Ethiopia, Viet Nam, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, the World Bank and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The Global Conference on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change is intended as a follow-up to the Shared Vision Statement agreed at the Seventeenth Session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-17) in May 2009 and to further develop the agriculture, food security and climate change agenda.

In preparation for the Conference, the African Conference on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change, organized by the Government of Ethiopia and the African Union Commission, was held from 6-8 September 2010 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The African Conference brought together high-level policy makers, practitioners, international organizations and members of the scientific community from all African countries and produced a final communiqué containing a set of key recommendations. The final communiqué was presented at this Conference.

1. We are doing too little

Here is what scientists are telling us:

■Glaciers are shrinking.
■The Artic ice cap is disappearing.
■The sea level is rising.
■The cycles of evaporation and precipitation are intensifying.
■Species are becoming extinct at faster and faster rates.
■Rising CO2 levels are acidifying the oceans, killing coral, shelfish, plankton and disrupting the whole marine food chain.
■Huge amounts of methane – now frozen undersea or in the Artic permafrost – could be released into the atmosphere; and methane has 25 times as much greenhouse effect potential as CO2.
■Science predicts that if nothing changes, global warming will create hundreds of millions of climate refugees by the end of the century. Where will they go?
■A larger number of extreme weather events will exacerbate food, water and energy scarcities; this will bring different groups into competition over dwindling resources and land, potentially turning fragile states into failed states.
We know that in order to curb these worrysome trends, we need radical change.

El jueves 4 de noviembre en las instalaciones de la Universidad Autónoma de la Ciudad de México (UACM), se realizará un importante encuentro de las plataformas más destacadas rumbo a la Cumbre ambiental en Can...cún (Vía Campesina, Diálogo climático- Espacio México y Klimaforum 10), con los representantes del gobierno boliviano; el Canciller David Choquehuanca y el Embajador ante la ONU Pablo Solón.

A pocas semanas de iniciar la COP 16 este encuentro reviste una singular significación por las coincidencias que existen entre los distintos actores frente a una Cumbre que muchos anticipan de trámite y sin acuerdos.
Ahora más que nunca la movilización de los pueblos será fundamental para incidir en las trascendentes decisiones y acuerdos que se requieren tomar para salvar la vida en el planeta.

Space for the activities

Environmental-friendly tents will be provided which can host approximately 50 people, with the object to promote increased participation and create a wider range of proposals.
There will be additional bigger spaces for conferences and plenary speeches/lectures.
Organizations and institutions, that wish to do so, can reserve spaces for expositions, promotion or other uses in the main field.
